Lake Kournas from Above: The Only Freshwater Lake in Crete
In north-western Crete, in the Apokoronas district and a few kilometres from Georgioupoli, Lake Kournas is the only freshwater lake on the island. Seen from the sky it becomes almost abstract: a vast sheet of deep blue, a curve of pale turquoise shallows and the greenery lining the shore. This aerial fine art photograph captures its soft geometry and the shades of its water, far from the usual postcard views.
A Gradient of Blues, Pale Shallows and a Small Boat
The composition rests on the contrast between the deep blue water on the left and the light of the shallows on the right. The winding line between them leads the eye from top to bottom. At the bottom left, a small boat leaves its wake and gives the scene its scale. The result is a calm, graphic image that brings air and depth to a wall.
A Place Apart in Crete
The lake has a shoreline of about 3.5 km. Its banks are lined with hills, tavernas and pedalo rentals, and a nature preserve protects the south-west of the lake. It is one of the most peaceful places on Crete’s north coast, only minutes from the sea.

Why Choose a Lake Kournas Wall Art
Its soothing blues and greens suit a living room, bedroom, office or dining room. The aerial composition, with no horizon, feels modern and almost abstract, and works as well in a large format as in a small one. A piece for anyone who loves Crete, water and landscapes seen from above.
